Sanding Cloth Roll
PAOLA Sanding Cloth Roll
PAOLA Sanding Cloth Rolls are built on a cotton cloth backing for sanding wood, steel, iron, stone, cast iron and similar materials. They are supplied in continuous rolls and used across every industry.
The cotton backing is highly flexible, so the roll conforms easily to curved and irregular surfaces. Quality depends as much on the cloth as on the abrasive grain.

Why the Backing Matters
The cotton cloth behind the grain is every bit as important as the grain itself. Low-cost rolls use cheap cloth with a high polyester content, and that single substitution changes the performance of the product.
Two rolls can look identical on the shelf and be completely different in raw material — and therefore in efficiency. Efficiency is what determines real cost.

Choosing a Supplier
A low price is not a bargain when it comes from low-grade raw material. No manufacturer can produce a quality abrasive from cheap grain and cheap cloth, and any supplier who claims otherwise should be treated with caution.
There are genuinely good roll manufacturers in the market, and none of them are cheap. Quality raw material has a price, and that price appears in the finished product.
What buyers frequently overlook is output. A quality roll can deliver several times the working life of a cheap one. Between two comparable brands, a price difference of five per cent is normal. When a product is priced fifty per cent below the market, there is only one explanation: the raw material.

Roll Types
Sanding cloth rolls are supplied in two forms. Each is engineered for a different way of working, and the distinction matters more than most buyers assume.
1. Shop Roll
A flexible cloth roll for manual sanding. The operator tears off the length required and works the surface by hand. This is the correct grade for hand finishing, deburring and maintenance work.
2. Machine Roll (Belt-Grade)
A firmer backing engineered to resist heat, tension and speed. This is the grade converted into sanding belts and mounted on machines.
Joining a shop roll into a belt with general-purpose adhesive is a common and costly mistake. The joint forms a ridge, the belt marks the workpiece, and the machine itself can be damaged. Use the machine roll for belt conversion.

Abrasive Grains
1. Aluminium Oxide
Red grain. For wood and general metals, and the most widely used grade worldwide. The economical choice for everyday sanding and rust removal.
2. Silicon Carbide
Black grain. For cast iron, alloyed metals and glass. Long service life on hard, brittle materials.
3. Zirconia Alumina (Zirconium)
Blue or green grain. For hardened steel, stainless steel and super alloys. High stock removal combined with a long working life.
4. Ceramic Grain
The most aggressive grade available. Very high stock removal with low heat generation, for hardened steels and super alloys in demanding production environments.

Sizes
1. 15 cm x 50 m
The standard commercial size and the most widely traded worldwide. Suitable for both hand and machine work depending on the grade specified.
2. 1.65 m x 50 m (Jumbo Roll)
Supplied to converters and manufacturers for slitting to customer-specified widths. This is the format for buyers who cut their own sizes or produce belts in volume.

Grits
Standard range: #40 · #60 · #80 · #100 · #120 · #150 · #180 · #220 · #320 · #400 · #600
Available on request: #24 · #36 · #800 · #1000 · #1200
A note on grit sequence: a fine finish is reached by working progressively through the grits. Skipping intermediate grits does not produce a finer result — it wastes the abrasive and leaves scratches the finer grit cannot remove.

Quality Grades
1. PAOLA Economy (eco)
Standard quality at a competitive price, suitable for general-purpose work. Built well above the level of comparable products in the same price bracket.
2. PAOLA Excellent
Premium cotton backing and higher-purity grain. Maximum service life, fastest cut and the best surface finish. The grade to specify where throughput and tool life are measured.
Applications
Metal fabrication, woodworking and furniture, automotive manufacturing and refinishing, stone processing, and general maintenance. Supplied in all four abrasive grains across the full grit range.

Efficiency and Real Cost
Efficiency here means cut rate — how quickly the abrasive removes material. A slow abrasive reduces daily output while fixed costs stay exactly the same. Fewer finished parts against the same overhead is a direct loss.
Procurement teams that buy abrasives on unit price alone are measuring the wrong number. On a production line, the number that matters is cost per finished part, and a cheap abrasive with poor cut rate loses on that measure every time.

Economy (eco): standard quality for general-purpose work, at a highly competitive price.
Excellent: built to the highest international standards, with maximum service life, the fastest stock removal, the best surface finish and the highest working speed.
A shop roll is for hand sanding: the operator tears off the length required and works the surface manually.
A machine roll has a firmer backing engineered to resist heat, tension and speed. It is mounted on a machine or converted into a sanding belt.
Aluminium oxide is the general-purpose grain, supplied in red. It covers wood and general metals and is the most economical grade in the range.
It is the correct choice for the majority of everyday sanding and rust removal work. For hardened steel, stainless steel or super alloys, specify zirconia or ceramic instead.
The machine roll (belt-grade). Its backing withstands the pressure, heat and speed of belt operation and resists tearing at the joint.
Converting a shop roll into a belt creates a ridge at the joint that marks the workpiece and can damage the machine. It is a false economy.
Red is aluminium oxide, for general metals and wood. Black is silicon carbide, for cast iron, alloyed components and glass.
The catalogue table above sets out which grade suits which material.
